CARIAD is the automotive software company of the Volkswagen Group. n April 2022, CARIAD established its first subsidiary outside Europe. CARIAD China is dedicated to providing the most cutting-edge software platform products for the Volkswagen Group's models in the Chinese market, thus making a significant contribution to the Group’s leadership in the intelligent connected vehicles era. As the primary software R&D force of the Volkswagen Group (China), CARIAD China has a team of over 1,000 software professionals distributed in three R&D bases in Beijing, Hefei and Shanghai.

CARIAD China has built partnerships with many Chinese tech companies to contribute decisively to the advancement of the Group's strategy in China. In February 2024, CARIAD China led and integrated the strengths of its joint ventures and subsidiaries to establish the "C-Group”, which consolidated parallel development initiatives.

In partnership with Horizon Robotics, CARIAD is strengthening the development of ADAS/AD functions and its expertise in chip design within the CARIZON joint venture. Together with ThunderSoft (joint venture CARTHUNDER), a manufacturer of state-of-the-art products and technologies for intelligent operating systems, CARIAD is further expanding its expertise in infotainment and connectivity. With the integration of ARK into CARIAD China (CARIATIVE), the company is expanding its activities in the UX/UI sector.

To accelerate the Group’s “in China, for China” strategy, CARIAD China collaborates with the Volkswagen China Technology Company (VCTC) and Xpeng to develop China Electronic Architecture (CEA), a zonal Electrical/Electronic (E/E) architecture. During the development of CEA, CARIAD China takes a leading role and empowers the product team through a pioneering layer design, which enables the basic R&D of CEA to be highly scalable, thus allowing it to be adapted to Volkswagen Group’s vehicle platforms. Meanwhile, CARIAD China led the C-Group with adopting the R&D mode of each division and efficient synergy to accelerate the CEA delivery from Smart Cockpit, ADAS, UX/UI, and cloud & backend.

At the same time, CARIAD China is committed to the local R&D and adaption of the global platform E3 1.1 & 1.2, while boosting “in China, for China” product deliveries based on the global platform delivery.
